Lighting Upgrades in Windsor, CO

A lighting upgrade looks like a shopping decision and is really an electrical one: how many fixtures a circuit can carry, whether the ceiling can take a can light, whether the switch box has a neutral for a dimmer, and how the attic above it is built. Precision Service Electric installs recessed lighting, under-cabinet lighting, ceiling fans and exterior lighting across Windsor, and works out the circuit before anyone cuts a hole. What a Lighting Upgrade Actually Changes

Most homes are lit with one fixture in the middle of the ceiling, sized for the room’s footprint rather than for what happens in it. A real upgrade replaces that single source with layers: general light, task light where the work happens, and accent or accent-adjacent light that gives a room depth.

Layers only exist if the wiring allows them: separate switch legs, a dimmer that suits the drivers, and circuit capacity for the extra heads. Eight cans on a single switch is not layering — it is the old problem with more fixtures.

Recessed Lighting: Layout Before Hardware

Spacing and Placement

Placement follows the work surfaces and the room’s shape rather than a grid drawn on a plan. In a kitchen that means light landing on the counters and the island instead of a shadow thrown by whoever is chopping; in a living room it means washing the walls and leaving the corner above the sofa dark.

As a first pass, the common estimate is half the ceiling height between fixtures, then corrected with the fixture’s own spacing criteria and the task underneath. Treat that as the opening of the layout conversation, not the finished layout.

Insulation-Contact and Air-Tight Ratings

In an insulated ceiling — most of a Windsor house, upstairs and over a garage — new recessed luminaires must be rated for insulation contact (IC) and, where the energy code applies to the thermal envelope, rated air-tight and sealed to the ceiling. Keeping insulation away from a non-IC fixture is not an accepted substitute for new work. The wrong fixture in the wrong ceiling is a fire or moisture problem, and it is invisible once the drywall is patched.

New Construction vs. Remodel Housings

What sits above the ceiling decides the housing. With open attic there is room to work from above; with a floor overhead the install has to happen from below through a cut opening. Getting that call right at the start is the difference between a tidy finish and a patched ceiling.

Controls: The Part People Forget

Every dimmer carries a minimum load and a published driver list, and a fixture that hums or flickers on an old dimmer is usually mismatched rather than broken. Switching from several points — hall, stair, a kitchen with two ways in — is a wiring decision taken while the walls are still open.

Most smart switches want a neutral in the box. Older Windsor switch loops frequently do not have one, which is why the box is opened before any device is ordered.

Load and Circuits

Against heat or an EV charger, lighting is a light load — right up to the point where a room goes from one fixture to ten. What runs out first on a 15-amp lighting circuit is seldom amperage: it is the switching, the box fill, and how many separate runs the layout needs.

Lighting inside a basement finish or an addition is one piece of a bigger circuit plan, and when the panel has no spaces left, that becomes the first thing we price. The panel side of it lives on the Windsor panel replacement page.

Under-Cabinet, Ceiling Fans and Exterior Lighting

Under-cabinet lighting is a wiring job as much as a lighting one: the driver has to live somewhere accessible, the run has to be protected, and the switch has to be where a person actually reaches. Ceiling fans need a fan-rated box anchored to structure, not a standard ceiling box, and a wall control that matches the fan’s wiring.

Outdoor and security lighting brings its own rules — fixtures rated for wet and damp locations, ground-fault protection where it applies, and a switch placed so nobody has to cross a dark yard to reach it.

Permits and Inspection in Windsor

Adding circuits, running new home runs or installing exterior lighting is permitted electrical work in Windsor. The Town of Windsor issues the permit and inspections run through SAFEbuilt at 970-674-1036, against the 2024 I-Codes the Town adopted effective January 1, 2026.

Swapping a fixture onto wiring that already exists usually sits outside the permit; running new circuits and new cable does not. Where the scope crosses that line the permit gets pulled — licensed and insured under Colorado licence #3918.

What the Work Involves

The walkthrough settles three things: what the room is for, what is above the ceiling, and what the existing circuit can take. Only then is the layout marked out. From there it is cable, boxes, housings, fixtures and controls — tested before we hand the ceiling back for finishing.

One room usually fits in a day. A floor or a basement is broken into stages, because a household has to keep living in the house while the work happens.

What a Lighting Upgrade Costs in Windsor

Fixture price is the smallest variable. Access is the biggest: ceiling height, whether there is attic above, insulation, the condition of the existing ceiling, the head count, the number of switch points, and whether any new circuit is needed.

Per-can figures advertised online vary with what each company includes, and any number offered before someone has been in the attic is provisional by definition. Ours comes after the walkthrough, once the count and the circuit work are both on the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many recessed lights do I need in a room?

There is no fixed count. Ceiling height, the room’s use and the surfaces that need light decide it; the usual first estimate is half the ceiling height between fixtures, refined with the fixture’s spacing criteria and by keeping glare away from where people sit.

Do recessed lights need a special fixture in an insulated ceiling?

Where the energy-code requirements apply to the thermal envelope, yes — the housing has to be IC-rated, air-tight and sealed to the ceiling. Outside those requirements a non-IC fixture is permitted with the clearances its listing specifies, and that is settled before the ceiling is opened.

Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?

Almost always a mismatch rather than a failure — an old dimmer whose minimum load the new LEDs never reach, or a driver missing from its compatibility list. Matching the dimmer to the fixture, and checking the neutral, is what fixes it.

Do I need a permit to install recessed lighting in Windsor?

If the work adds circuits or new wiring, yes — the Town of Windsor issues the electrical permit and inspections run through SAFEbuilt at 970-674-1036. A straight fixture swap on an existing circuit generally is not permitted work.

Can you install lights where there is no attic access?

Most of the time, yes — remodel housings go in from below through a cut opening and the cable is fished to the nearest point it can be reached. Which approach applies depends on how the ceiling is built, and that is confirmed before the layout is signed off.

Do you install ceiling fans too?

Yes, provided the fan is supported properly — a listed fan-support box or system, or independent structural support installed to the manufacturer’s instructions — with a control that matches how the fan is wired.

How long does a lighting installation take?

One room fits in a day. A whole floor, a vaulted ceiling or a basement finish runs across several, scheduled so the house stays livable throughout.
